Study Permit

Every year, thousands of Foreign Nationals come to Canada to study in our Universities, Colleges. To do so, they must obtain a study permit issued by the Canadian government.

To be eligible to study in Canada:

  • You must have been accepted by a school, college, university or other educational institution in Canada.
  • You must prove that you have enough money to pay for your:
  • tuition fees;
  • living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada; and
  • return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada.
  • You must be a law-abiding citizen with no criminal record and not be a risk to the security of Canada. You may have to provide a police certificate.
  • You must be in good health and willing to complete a medical examination, if necessary.
  • You must satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.

Study without a Study Permit

In certain cases, some Foreign Nationals will be able to study without a Study Permit, including those studying for under 6 months, minor children in Canada or the family members or staff of Foreign Diplomats.

In addition to this, spouses or common-law partners of foreign students are eligible for a work permit for the duration as the study permit.

Extend your study permit

The expiry date on your study permit tells when you have to stop studying. This date could be the length of your:

  • program, plus 90 extra days
  • pre-requisite courses plus 90 extra days (if you were conditionally accepted by your school) or
  • passport minus 30 days, if your passport will expire before you can finish your studies.

The extra 90 days gives you time to prepare to leave Canada or to apply to extend your status in Canada.

You must apply to extend your study permit at least 30 days before the original expiry date.
